Background Summary

On July 12, 2011, the Occoquan Town Council adopted a charter for an Occoquan Strategic Planning Committee (OSPC), specifically tasking the committee with making “recommendations to the Town Council on a 5-10 year vision for the town, as well as specific recommendations on how to implement that vision.” Members were appointed to the committee that same month.

Among their activities, the OSPC held several public meetings and conducted a number of site visits to other jurisdictions. On May 2, 2012, it made its first preliminary presentation to the Occoquan Town Council, and followed that on January 9, 2013, with the submission of the Strategic Plan and the presentation of an executive summary to the Town Council.  On August 20, 2013, the Town Council adopted the draft Strategic Plan as a framework for discussion and implementation as circumstances warrant.

Community Input

Six public meetings on the draft strategic plan were held between January and March, 2014.

About

During the summer/fall of 2017, the Town of Occoquan worked with Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) to conduct a parking and traffic study within the Town of Occoquan.  The main area of focus is parking within the historic district, as well as cut-through traffic. View the project’s scope.

Data Collection

In August 2017, data was collected to inventory the number of available parking spaces within the historic district. After the inventory data was collected, data was collected to identify parking occupancy (how often parking spaces are occupied) and parking turn-over (how often do vehicles stay in those parking spaces).  In addition, data was collected regarding cut-through traffic to identify the number of vehicles that cut-through town.

Community Meeting: September 27

A community meeting on the parking and traffic study was held on Wednesday, September 27, 2017. It was an open house where the public was invited to learn about the study and provide input. JMT provided a presentation including a brief project overview, followed by Q&A. Information gathered during this community meeting and surveys have been included as part of the final report, which was provided to the Town Council in November 2017.

Business and Community Parking Surveys – Closed October 2, 2017

A community parking survey and business parking survey were conducted through October 2, 2017.  Information gathered through the survey tools are included as part of the project’s report.
