Architectural Review Board

About the ARB

The Architectural Review Board (ARB) is a board of town residents and a business representative appointed by the Town Council to advise the Council with respect to maintenance of the historic and cultural integrity of both existing and proposed buildings within the historic district. The ARB reviews all plans for new construction and changes or additions to existing buildings within the town’s historic district. The ARB meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm at Town Hall. All meetings are open to the public. More information on serving on a Town board or commission.

Exterior Changes in the Historic District – Commercial and Residential Properties

Any modification to the exterior of a building in the historic district must be reviewed by the ARB prior to implementation. Applicable modifications can include, but are not limited to, changes to roofs, windows, siding, doorways, fences, walls, overhangs, railings, paint color, decks, etc. Applications for exterior changes are available below and may be submitted to Town Hall, Monday – Friday, 9 am to 4 pm, along with an application fee.  Completed applications are then scheduled for the next regular ARB meeting for consideration. Applicants or a representative must attend the ARB meeting to present their request to the Board. Please ensure that applications are complete and include required support materials.

Signage in the Town of Occoquan

Most signage in the Town of Occoquan require permitting prior to installation, including both commercial and residential properties in and outside of the Historic District.  View Sign Permits for more information on allowable signage and applications.  Sign permits are reviewed and issued by the Town’s Zoning Administrator.

ARB Meeting Schedule

The ARB meets regularly on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm at Town Hall, 314 Mill Street.   All meetings are open to the public. Applications must be submitted to Town Hall by COB on the Tuesday prior to the scheduled meeting in order to be placed on the agenda for consideration by the ARB.  Please contact Town Hall for general questions.
